GENERAL ATTITUDE

Jörmungandr sees the lives of people as akin to characters or game pieces. Viewing your life is akin to her lying on the couch with snacks and tea while reading a book about you with calm fascination. While she seems rather lofty and talks in often archaic or cryptic language, she speaks to you as though you are a character in a novel or story. The lives of humans are an entertaining distraction in her life, and so she is not concerned with your life or death unless she deems you as a significant threat to the universe.

While she has great aptitude as a councillor for her foresight and decision-making, it often takes a lot of effort to coerce her to work, so most of the daily affairs are managed by her staff once she writes out her plans or decrees. She used to be primarily concerned with maintaining the balance of chaos and order on a universal scale. Her main overarching interest is in fate or destiny: the fate of this world, the universe, mankind, and maybe even you.

BACKSTORY

Jörmungandr was summoned by a mage before Fino was known as a magical city. At that time, it was just a burgeoning village near a river. Her summoner took advantage of her shedding cycle to catch her unaware, pulling a scale of the original World Serpent into a breach. As a result of being an incomplete replica and a fragment, Jörmungandr arrived without her status as a divine being, appearing akin to a lamia more than a serpent. Despite these turn of events, they stayed together as there was no way to return to her original world. He dreamed of an era where Fino could be the epicentre of magical activity on their continent, and shared in that dream with Jörmungandr.

Unfortunately, war broke out. After his service, he became immobilized from his spine down. He couldn’t fulfill his dream of his home becoming the magical city, and so Jörmungandr suggested write he down his wishes and to pass it down to his next of kin and future generations. She gave comfort to him for the rest of his life and spent many peaceful days together.

On his deathbed, Jörmungandr revealed that she changed his fate ever-so-slightly. He was fated to die in that war. By imbuing a brooch he wore made by Jörmungandr, he was able to avert certain death and return home. To prevent her own death, he bound Jörmungandr to his beloved birthplace, Fino: “may she live and watch over this city.” She accepted and vowed to protect Fino and watch over his future kin.

When her master finally died, Jörmungandr was laid to sleep and put into magical brumation by his (rather jealous) wife. He left instructions for his next of kin to wake her up during a more peaceful era, but the documents became lost over time. His wife intended Jörmungandr to remain asleep forever.

Later on, those who found the master’s writings deemed them as the ramblings of a delusional mage whose lifelong companion could not possibly be a monster girl that lived in a giant temple. That was just utterly nonsense.

Eventually, the cooling magic in her temple wore off and the temperatures in her enclosure warmed again. Jörmungandr awoke to an era of peace — in the magical city, Fino.

She was regarded as a good portent, an icon, even an emblem of their land. When awaking, she helped avert a minor economic crisis by her powers and neutralised a rather bothersome cursed magical item. After explaining her powers and her history with her master, people soon realized that if she had not saved the mage she was bound with, the city of Fino would have not been what it is today.

The people recognised that the crest and herald of Fino features an ouroboros — a symbol that represented her. When she was elected as councillor, she gladly accepted.
