GENERAL ATTITUDE

Matilda is excessively gentle, sensitive, and apologetic to a fault. She often tries her best to be kind and accommodating to others, though it often stems from her own insecurities as well as a desire to atone for what she believes to be her past crimes. She appears to be pacifistic as well, though in honesty it’s merely cowardice. To her, running from a fight is statistically more likely to keep you safe than engaging a hostile person.

Beneath the soft exterior, she is a brilliant thinker and considered by many to be an innovator and genius of both magical engineering and the medical field. She is by most definitions, a scholar through and through. She is a Renaissance woman with mastery over many disciplines. She can be absorbed by projects and thought experiments, losing track of time and hunger entirely. ABILITY INFORMATION

Luminary Ark

Matilda lives in a floating vessel that is airborne from 500 ft to 10,000 ft. It is powered by intricate crystalline technology that keeps it aloft. When viewed up close, it looks like a pearl-white sailing ship with trees instead of masts. It is coated with a laminate coating of a highly durable organic compound, rendering it both physically strong and untraceable by most magical means. It’s also highly reflective. This means that when viewed from the ground, it often appears as a twinkle in the sky. It rather cumbersome and slow, its top speed only the average of most transportation airships. Its main purpose is to stay extremely still, so the Ark acts more like a slow drifting island than a vessel. Therefore, Matilda avoids common air routes by nature.

Outside the Ark are the tree masts and a small vegetable garden and field. Inside the Ark is an alchemical laboratory, a medical room and an operating theatre. The centrepiece of this vessel is a large telescope and an observatory, for which Matilda also sleeps in. Cosy cushions and bedding are provided.

The Luminary Ark very rarely comes down on the ground: if so, it is for repairs or maintenance. Because it so rarely alights, boarding and disembarking from the vessel is highly unusual. By activating a magical command on her necklace, Matilda is surrounded by light and ascends into the Ark. If the ark is more than 800 ft away, she is subsumed into the light and is teleported the remaining distance to the Ark. The same thing happens in reverse for disembarking the Ark.

She may specify people to take with her if they are in her immediate vicinity. There is one quirk though: boarding the Ark with significant distance between ground and sky can often take some surrounding bovines within a three-mile radius. Matilda often must return the cows once they board her airship. She has become very acquainted with deciphering livestock brands to return cows to their owners.

Primary Scan

Matilda can use her Life Signum to scan a patient to detect internal injuries, fractures and tumours and to visualise organs, tissue and blood flow. The patient must remain fairly still in the process for her to see. It appears as an image in her mind’s eye with excellent clarity. She can also reproduce a part of what she sees as an intaglio or an etching through a specialized printmaking method in her Luminary Ark.

Pneumadiver

By placing the end of the Life Signum near the head of a person, Matilda can dive into a representation of their soul or mental state. The recipient must consent to her use of this power, otherwise the spell will fail. Both her and the recipient do not fall asleep, though it is a state very close to sleep. Both are conscious of what takes place in world of their soul and their bodies are present in the dream: either as a representation or symbol of their self, or their corporeal form.

The world of a person often follows nonsensical logic or rules of the recipient and often does not have to make sense. A very closed off person may have layers to their world: as one might explore a bright, well-laid out mansion and its numerous rooms, reaching the bottom of a dusty and cobweb-filled basement may be more challenging. Sometimes, reaching the a part of the subconscious mind would be like going into the basement and unearthing a dusty old box to look at its contents. It’s just happening to find the right one that might be a little more difficult.

A person who had their mind altered or erased could have their world appear fragmented or empty. Measures to find clues about someone may be more cryptic or challenging. OOC: the creator of the character decides or collaborates to determine the logic of the world and how it would function.

By pneumadiving, Matilda can either understand more about a person, help to find certain behavioural patterns, or even restore lost memories. Restoring lost memories may take several sessions spaced out over several weeks. Each pneumadiving session can only last so long, and Matilda can only uncover so much at a time to prevent strain on a person’s mental wellbeing. It is also highly likely to retraumatize a person if Matilda is not careful, though Matilda cannot give any new fears or traumas: only unearthing ones that already exist.

Reficio

Matilda is highly skilled in curative magic and alchemy. Giving triage, reversing internal bleeding, and saving one from life-threatening wounds or diseases are not out of her ability. She has an adept knowledge of anatomy for many creatures, particularly human and bovine. Her methods are extremely meticulous and costs a vast amount of her concentration. In exchange, her work is impeccable. She has a fine eye for detail and her work leaves no trace of scarring and is near undetectable.

With enough research and time, she can often prolong the life of people suffering from diseases that are difficult to treat. However, repeated visits are necessary, and check-ups are paramount to keeping good health. She is not a miracle worker, or so she says.

Matilda can do things such as reverse signs of aging, alter one’s body, or even one’s assigned gender. Doing any of those tasks requires significant time for the patient to rest and recuperate afterwards. Otherwise, it’s simply a matter of discussing it with her. Creating extra flesh or additional body parts needs her approval as it often requires a cadaver or a donor. The success rate is less predictable as the body may reject foreign flesh. She can, however, use the skin of a fish as a graft to aid in healing third-degree burns.

Procrea Valus

Matilda is able to create potions that prevent conception and most sexually transmitted infections and/or diseases. There are two forms: one that is taken after intercourse, and one that is taken at least seven days in advance. Each have their own side effects but are generally benign, usually tenderness or increased sensitivity of the erogenous zones.

She also has another form a contraception: a tattoo placed over the lower abdominal that has the same effect as her potions, though the effects are permanent until removed. Her main patients are predominately assigned female at birth, though she has developed contraception for those assigned male at birth. To remove the tattoo, this often involves visiting Matilda again, though a skilled mage in the curative arts may also remove it.

She can also alter the tattoo’s effects, such as having a tattoo that increases libido, or having it glow when aroused, or having the ability to share orgasms mutually. Matilda is unfortunately, a bit too small-brained when it comes to lewdness to think of more effects and is open for further experimentation. The previously listed effects are suggested from her patients that want something to excite their clientele.

Life Signum (Magical Focus)

Her Life Signum is not technically meant for use as a weapon in any combative sense. As a staff, it is comprised of many delicate parts and has a strange, geometric design. It is instead a magical focus and a tool she uses for diagnostics and healing.

Matilda is at least thirty years behind in destructive magic and combat arts and has not kept up her practice, so she would be easy to take down in a fight.

It seems part of Matilda’s half-Genius heritage is responsible for keeping her mind and body young, though a major part of it does seem to be her own research. Other than that, Matilda doesn’t have anything to note for being half-Genius except for some odd, bovine-like traits like her ears, horns, and tail. Other odd habits include eating and chewing for long periods of time, being vegetarian and being startled by you even though she sees you standing next to her. Oh, and having… high milk production.

BACKSTORY

Matilda was born as the middle child of numerous siblings from the union of a woman and a fey, specifically a Genius – a being who has a human upper body and a bull for the lower body. In comparison to her siblings who were blessed with impressive physical endurance and might, Matilda was comparatively normal. Being so unremarkable meant she found her calling in books and literature when young. She was already a curious mind and had a knack for fixing things. She had a fascination for curative alchemy as well, helping her siblings get patched up after playing or exploring in their home close to the border of Eresydon. There were no doctors or apothecaries for miles, so it became necessity for Matilda to look after everyone.

When she was old enough, she became a student at the Magus and Engineer Association, applying to be an Engineer. She soon became an Exalted for her contributions to improving the functionality of Ashieran aircraft. Being an Exalted and a MAE Alumni had one specific benefit: connections. Matilda was hitting a wall with her study of curative magic and alchemy. If she could glean any information about Levia Destrin’s ability to change human flesh, she might be able to further her practice and knowledge. Obtaining smuggled papers was difficult, but not as difficult or dangerous as trying to enter the Republic of Athefast as a non-human.

In the end, the young Matilda’s efforts were at best a shallow mimesis of the Pontiff’s power. Yet her venture was not for naught: she was able to find a theory to restructure the makeup of a person’s body and improve their vitality and strength. She presented a private seminar at the MAE to those in the top of their field, hoping that it would shed light on some mysteries of the human body. In addition, she was able to develop a theory of how Levia Destrin’s flesh-warping may have worked and how it may have been utilised. An organisation that was affiliated with Hycliff’s top hospitals sought that information and her research, so they hired Matilda and other top researchers to oversee a project to rehabilitate those with diseases with a prognosis of an early death. She accepted, believing it to be for a noble cause.

That turned out to be the biggest mistake of her life. The organisation was not affiliated with the hospitals of Hycliff. Instead, it was complicit in human trafficking, extortion, and torture. The “patients” that were supposedly receiving treatment were experimented on using her theories, their bodies warped beyond human recognition after she healed them. Other researchers stole her work and methods to use for ill gain. Matilda was broken, her trust in people ultimately shattered.

She quit, though she knew she would be tracked down and eliminated for her knowledge of their secrets. Matilda found refuge in a brothel in Hycliff where her sisters worked. Her two older sisters wished to have a way to reduce the risk of pregnancy and disease, so Matilda reluctantly used her abilities to find a way to bring that to fruition in exchange for sheltering her against those still trying to track her down.

Over time, she developed contraceptive methods in the forms of potions and eventually tattoos. Her sisters praised her for her inventions, as it changed their line of work immensely. Encouraged by other escorts in the industry, Matilda soon had a long list of patients desiring potions and tattoos. With enough funding from her patients, Matilda was able to release the potion’s method and ingredients to apothecaries for manufacture in Hycliff, preventing the risk of having her creation traced back to herself.

The formula was reverse-engineered and became widely available all over the continent. Former prostitutes and escorts who were there at the time spoke of a “young, horned alchemist that really helped out the oldest profession in the world.” However, as it comes from the mouths of former prostitutes, this information to archivists and researchers is at best, apocryphal.

Once it was safe to come out of hiding, she used the remaining funding to build her Luminary Ark as a way to ensure total seclusion and safety, only alighting ever so often to help those who may need her assistance. The Ark was completed and had its maiden flight in 769FAU, a project that spanned over seven years. The main conflicts were funding issues and working on the light beam technology. By the end of it, she was thirty-eight years old.

She found some of the patients she operated on who survived, trying to reverse the changes made to their bodies. Matilda dedicated herself to easing their mental burdens as repentance, trying to soothe their tormented minds. She was also visited by former sex workers who left their jobs due to repeated violence and trauma, wanting their tattoos removed to start a family. They too, sought solace from her. Her work was not perfect, but she deemed it necessary to help those in need.

Yet even with the passage of time, human experimentation persisted all over the continent in secret. Matilda could only hope she could be there to reverse the damage she inadvertently caused as personal atonement.
