GENERAL ATTITUDE

Gerhard is a man trapped in cycles of violence that he cannot escape. The remains of his former chivalrous and righteous persona is only present in short glimpses of handshakes and initial greetings, preferring to rule things from the shadows nowadays. He deals in blood, and consumes both violence and sex as though they were interchangeable things to satisfy him. He believes people look the most beguiling when they are bound and helpless, whether that’s for play or for work.

Most believe Gerhard is a man with no morals. This may be true in who he chooses to sleep with — he doesn’t discriminate and anyone is fair game. He doesn’t care if he’s old enough to be your father — that’s what makes it all the more appealing. Very few tend to have a lasting relationship with him, and it’s openly transactional: you get what you want of it, he gets what he wants — though not all the time. If you ask for pain, he’ll withhold it from you until it becomes unbearable. He craves that kind of emotional and physical torment, the cruelty of denial; the slow torture of the soul.

For “work”, he abides by a strict code of how he operates. The criminal underworld of Hycliff has its own set of rules and regulations. While nothing about his profession is noble or romantic, the code of brotherhood is the closest thing there is. The only thing that matters is having the power to control; to have things on your own terms. It is the power to be able to deploy and operate swiftly without the need for bureaucracy or bowing to authority.

BACKSTORY

“Your pathetic life is not worth staining my hands, mortal. Nor would death be an adequate punishment. You desire chains? I shall give them. Your child will be your burden. A chain across your soul knowing what you took from them. Bare it and ask yourself daily: was the effort worth the cost?”

– Azazel, Bringer of Dawn.

Gerhard was born in Einsen under a fallen noble family. His father had apparently angered the will of a celestial for his hubris in trying to chain them to his will. To appease the angel, he prostrated himself and asked for the angel to spare him. In exchange, the life of his firstborn child was offered as a sacrifice. At birth, Gerhard’s ribcage nearly collapsed in on itself, suffocating his organs. Instead of bone, his skeleton was composed of cartilage. He lived in excruciating pain every day, alleviated only by the buoyancy that water offered him.

He was a horrific-looking child that barely looked human. He had glassy, sunken eyes and a body that was so decrepit, his cartilaginous structure could barely support the pressure of gravity on land. He couldn’t walk and was unable to chew food without causing acute pain. His mother sought out the best doctors in all of Ashiera to treat his condition. Eventually, she found a doctor with horns who was able to help, replacing and reinforcing cartilage structures with dense bone so that he would be able to live on land. That was Gerhard’s first experience with applied magic and its capabilities.

To maintain his newly given life, he needed to reinforce his structure with muscle to protect his joints in order to be able to live life like others did. He learned to walk when he was ten. After being able to move as his peers did, he did more than his advised training regimen. Gerhard built his body to sculpt muscle so that his life as a cursed youth was a distant memory. Eventually, he surpassed the average human in terms of strength, devoting himself purely to physicality.

He served as a Mage Knight, eighth division, under Maxwell Miller with several others who would later become the Knights of the Red Rose. He learned a great deal from Maxwell on how to fight and truly respected him as a man. As a Mage Knight, Gerhard had exceptional combat ability.

Most of his friends in the corps applied to be part of the Hyclian Knight Order. Gerhard had made his application as well. When it came to the review of his official records, he was denied. The record of his birth defect, his inability to be outfitted with armour, and his reliance on ranged weapons was deemed unsuitable to be considered for admittance into the Knight Order. Despite this, he remained fast friends with those that were elected to become Red Rose Knights. He was known for introducing Maxwell Miller to Vivian. At the time, Gerhard was dating her, though their relationship was strained. Later that year, Maxwell married Vivian and she bore him a son shortly afterwards.

Gerhard returned home to Einsen. He held a job in bars that catered towards sadomasochism, tying up women and patrons as performance. That was where he was noticed for his desire towards cruelty. Someone gave him purpose and meaning within an organisation: a brotherhood. Part of him wanted to prove that he was strong enough to survive in the harshest of conditions. In the criminal underworld, he would not be held back by what others might consider a defect.

He was indoctrinated into their ranks with hired killings, extortion, smuggling of illicit goods, and money laundering. He became both respected and feared for his strength and brutality, rising to the ranks of the upper echelons in the Brotherhood.

The news of the Night of Crimson Tears came to him when he was in Hycliff to attend Maxwell Miller’s 60th birthday. All the friends he made in his youth were dead. Birthday wishes and presents were replaced with funerary wreaths and offers of condolences. He attended each and every funeral of his comrades. During this time, he made particular note of Maxwell’s son’s inability to cry, both when he offered his condolences and during Maxwell’s funeral, though he never brought it to Vivian Miller’s attention.

He wondered perhaps, if Eustace was truly Maxwell’s son. But such a thought was preposterous.

With the help of Reinhardt, the survivor of the Night of Crimson Tears, Gerhard was able to get descriptions of the traitors. He spent the next five years expanding his reach in the criminal world, trying to find an angle into Athefast through connections. He personally hunted down those that organised the coup with what information he could find. The last, Freccia Strijel, he was unable to capture. There was never an opportune moment: a match-up between two ranged combatants was far too risky, especially with Freccia’s skills and marksmanship.

Once he finally put the Night of Crimson Tears to rest, he returned to Hycliff. Gerhard would never be lauded for bringing justice to those that killed his comrades. After all, he killed them in the way criminals killed each other, with excessive cruelty. To display that in polite society would betray his true nature.

After ineffectual restructuring of the Knights of the Red Rose, Gerhard challenged the position of captaincy in a formal duel. He won. The Knights of the Red Rose were finally laid to rest as history. Unable to cut his ties to the criminal world, the operation of the Knight Order merged into one entity that oversaw both sides of the law in Hycliff, giving rise to the Boltsworn.

That was three years ago. He found people that could overlook what crimes he committed. He captured a fiend who gave to him the gift of her submission. He finally had people respect him for his power.

Yet, even though he obtained power and prestige legitimately, it did not satisfy him. Only time would tell for how long he could keep up the facade of the knight order as a chivalrous organisation before it would be toppled.
