GENERAL ATTITUDE
Beautiful. Intelligent. Talented. Athletic. Calm. Courteous. These are all words to describe Lenore in her day-to-day life. The very image of a marriageable and delicate noble lady, she strives for excellence and perfection in everything that she does. Her first impression is extremely well calculated and she conducts herself in a professional manner. Men and women fall at her feet and are at her bidding with a simple utterance from her painted lips. It’s as though she was someone who emerged from a romantic painting of a woman with no visible flaws.
In truth, all of this is a façade. Lenore is vain, superficial and highly insecure about herself, both in her merits and in her appearance. She is fanatical about maintaining her figure and beauty. Taught from infancy that beauty is a woman’s crowning glory and sceptre, she is caged in its gilded prison. At home she ascribes to a set of strict beauty rituals. She washes her hair with flaxseed gel to increase its lustre and shine. After her hair is washed, she dons a silk dressing gown and would pace across her room until her hair is dried, doing stretches and exercise. She has daily face masks of crushed strawberries and honey. She has warm olive oil baths to keep her skin soft and supple.
If anything, Lenore is determined and an extremely hard worker. She once practised her violin so much she developed blisters and vomited blood from staying up all night practising. She is terrible at sports, yet she would run ten kilometres every day to improve her stamina, do one-hundred pushups and complete her exercise regime with barre and weights in order to not lose to anyone. This is why she dislikes people who are naturally gifted or put in no effort: she’d only recognise someone as her equal if they had to work hard for it.
The people who are closest to her know her to have quite the temper and to be extremely irritable at times. She has to have the final word in everything and hates losing arguments. Her calm demeanour vanishes when she is alone in her private quarters. She can be extremely melodramatic and be upset over the pettiest things. This is often expressed through her music as she pounds the keys with the extreme passion of a suffering artist. Other times she would ride or care for her horse until sunset until she finally feels calm enough to have tea, a light supper and to get her mandated beauty sleep of eight hours every night. If she is still not calm, she would do flower arranging and choose flowers based on the season and her mood.

BACKSTORY
The first lesson Lenore learned from her parents was: ‘don’t ever complain or lash out at humans.’
That was advice she carried forever, as a scar or a reminder of their shared trauma.. She had other lessons that were ingrained into her heart:
‘Keep your head down and just keep working hard.’
‘Demihumans that stand out get put in their place.’
‘If you behave badly in public, it would reflect badly on other demihumans, especially beastkin. They’d call us animals and enslave us again.’
That was exactly what Lenore did. Unfamiliar with the speech of humans from Ashiera, she couldn’t understand the other children at school and was mocked for her strange accent and inability to speak. Her parents were from Athefast and were never taught how to read or write in common language, only knowing commands for obedience and to speak until spoken to. They still held onto their original beastkin language and communicated in a series of trills, calls, chirps and whistles to Lenore.
In fact, Lenore’s birth name is not even Lenore. It’s a series of trills and clicks. The other children at school mocked her and called her ‘bird-brain’, and ‘pigeon-idiot’ because nobody was able to pronounce her name. They’d coo and caw at her whenever she tried to speak, laughing and throwing food at her.
She worked the hardest she could to prove that she wasn’t a ‘bird-brain’. This was when Lenore started to have her perfectionist and inferiority complex. If she couldn’t be in the good graces of her peers, she would work hard to have her efforts acknowledged by teachers instead, who did not mock or jeer at her. She learned the common language exceedingly quickly through repetition and mimicry, visualising every word in front of her and practising vigorously in the mirror.
Once she won the poetry recital competition, everyone stopped calling her bird brain. She found the name ‘Lenore’ from a poetry book she borrowed from the library, and that was how Lenore Amphelise was born. This was also the birth of her power, the Weight of Truth. Through her visualisation exercises, she gave birth to her words that carried weight so that all would listen and be awed by her.
After her first success, Lenore desired to be more integrated in Ashieran society. She tried her best to romanise her parents’ names, and looked at how to change their names legally so that she could submit it for the census. This may have been the first spark of Lenore’s interest in the fine minutiae of law.
If asked about Athefast, Lenore recalls very little. She had buried her unpleasant memories with only the knowledge she needed to survive in Ashiera. All she can recall is that her parents escaped with her by stowing away on a ship to Ashiera with other slaves. Conditions were harsh, and she remembered the putrid smell of refuse and stench of death. They found refuge in Juris, where they worked as humble tailors.
All throughout her life and even until the present day, Lenore helped her parents however she could by translating the common language to her parents and by helping them learn useful phrases. When it came to legal documents and papers, Lenore had to be the one to look over and decipher them. Eventually, she became so accustomed to it, she was able to see loopholes in the system that made the wealthy and powerful exempt from crime, so long as they had money. When she said she was going to bring it up with the justice system, her parents protested against her challenging the status quo.
After all, they ingrained in her, ‘don’t ever complain or lash out at humans’.
If she could not challenge the system, then she would fight it on its own terms. She left her peers behind, attending law school at fifteen. Over time, people recognised her for her talents and merits. She cultivated her image of beauty and perfection, creating a desirable narrative for herself with noble and fine hobbies such as music, horseback riding and flower arrangement. Lenore so desired the praise of others, that she wished to stand out and be above everyone else. After all, if she was number one, then nobody would have the right to hurt or judge her.
This eventually led her down the path of becoming a prosecutor. The justice system derived from the Democracy of Sery was highly sophisticated, yet the quality of lawyers in court sought to trample that noble reputation. Lenore desired to reach a new standard, to become the epitome of perfection and truth. After all, in Lenore’s eyes, the courtroom is a battle of words as the truth, not incomplete conjecture and assumption. Every rule, no matter how insignificant, must be upheld.
So long as she could make her own truth, she would become perfect, even if those standards became unreachable.
